How to replace window pane Window Panes

A cracked window pane can cause a lot of trouble. It can also be an opportunity to upgrade your glass to energy-efficient or insulated windows and enjoy benefits such as greater comfort, a higher the value of resales and lower utility costs.

You can do it yourself at a fraction of what it would cost to employ an expert. It requires the right tools and an hour or two of your time.

Glass

If your single-pane windows are outdated, deteriorating or broken, replacing them with newer glass that is tempered or insulated will improve energy efficiency and reduce noise while also preserving the historical integrity of older homes. The replacement of the window pane is easy and can be completed by homeowners with basic hand tools. You'll also require a replacement window pane, glazier's suggestions, pliers, and latex glaze putty. If you need to, you can use a heatgun to warm the old putty. Wear safety goggles and gloves before you begin. Working with broken glass can cause serious injuries.

Begin by removing any broken pieces of glass. It is best to use pliers for this, but a flathead can work as well. After that, use a wood chisel or putty knife remove the remaining old putty around the frame and the sash. It is recommended to do this using a sturdy ladder instead of the ground, and to have someone stand below the sash to help hold it steady.

Once you have removed all of the old putty, you can prepare the window sash replacement frame to fit the new pane. Bring these measurements to a hardware store or home center and have a piece of stock glass cut to size. Alternately, you can cut the glass yourself if have the right tools.

Putty

A hurled baseball, an errant rock or falling branch could cause a window pane to break or crack. Fortunately, windows can be repaired by simply placing a new piece in the right place. The glass is held in place by small clips made of metal called a glazier's point, and putty, also called glazing compound. Before installing a new pane, first get rid of the old one and clean up the area with a rag and the pull-type paint scraper or an abrasive wood chisel. Wear gloves and safety glasses while working. You'll need a heat gun when the window is fixed to the frame.

If you plan to reinstall the original sash, remove any molding pieces that are used to secure the old pane. Then you can sand the sash down to ensure it's level and ready for a new caulk. After the sash has been put back in place, you can apply a silicone caulk to the glass. This will ensure that it doesn't be leaking or fade over time.

Take out the glazing points in the rabbets. These are the grooves on the sash where the glass is located. If they're difficult to chisel, hold the hand tool, such as a heating gun over them for a few minutes to soften them. If you're using a heat gun, be cautious not to damage the sash or its railings by using the tool too tightly.

Prepare a bed for your new pane after you have removed the old glaze and putty. Roll a rope with glazing compound between your fingers, and make it about 1/2 inch thick. Then, push it into the rabbets, where the glass will rest. The glass should rest against the putty on both sides. If needed you want to tap your glass lightly into the rabbet using your thumb.

If the new pane is cracked then you can seal it with a solvent-based glass glue or silicone caulk prior to pressing it into the sash. If the crack isn't sealed, you'll require putty to keep the water out. When the putty dries, clean the oily film off the glass using a rag and allow it to dry completely prior to painting. Paint after the putty has dried completely. It will not make a strong seal and could be leaking or discoloring over time.

Paint

If you've had a broken window pane, you may be concerned about the expense of replacing it. The truth is, replacing a single pane of glass doesn't have to be costly if you do it on your own. Even a double-paned window could be replaced for a fraction of the price it will cost an expert.

If you are working on a large-sized window, make sure it is securely fastened to the frame. This job is relatively easy and fast using the proper tools and techniques.

When you are ready to start with the removal of the window pane. Pry out the glazing points made of metal that are attached to it. These are basically small metal triangles which function as "nails" which hold the window in in the wood frame. They are placed under a bead or glazing putty which hardens into solid wedge which holds the wood frame firmly in position and hides the points.
